Preparing for your Portrait Photography session!

Outdoor portrait photography can be a great experience. Here’s a few ideas to help you prepare.

To help ensure everything goes as planned, we’ve provided a list of things to help you prepare for your portrait photography session. Everyone is different, though – so this list may or may not be appropriate. Use it as a guide only.

Generally, the location will be decided by us; however, we can and do accept location requests, so if you have a special place in mind, please let us know.

We can’t guarantee anything, though. Some locations may not be suitable for a vast range of reasons. If this is the case, we’ll let you know why and discuss options.

  • Choose clothing that is suitable for the weather on the day. E.g. shorts and t-shirt for a hot summer day, or long pants and jacket for winter.
  • Keep outfits simple. Something that is easy to change in and out of. If you opt for complicated dresses and outfits, this can take up time, and you may end up with fewer photos than considered ideal.
  • Avoid bold logos and branding if possible. Simplicity is best.
  • You’re welcome to bring props to help personalise your sessions – such as books, musical instruments, and sports equipment. But again, keep it simple. Bringing multiple pieces of equipment is strongly discouraged.

Remember, all sessions are completed outside. We are not in a studio. For this reason, you should carefully consider what clothing you’ll be wearing on the day, as well as hair and makeup requirements.

  • Choose a hairstyle that can handle wind or humidity if outdoors.
  • Consider a simple DIY style that’s easy to touch up.
  • Keep your makeup simple
  • Bring small touch-up kits (powder, lipstick, hairpins).
  • We do not recommend the use of spray tans, even if you’ve been doing it for years.
  • Get your beauty sleep. Photoshop cannot fix tired.

Again, we are outdoors. You must be prepared for hair and makeup that may not be perfect. It could be hot, wet, windy, humid – all of which are going to impact hair and makeup.

All sessions are completed outdoors. This means varying and sometimes unpredictable weather. We shoot in most weather conditions – including summer and winter, and the shoot will not be rescheduled or cancelled on the account of poor weather – unless extreme weather conditions make it unpracticable and unsafe to do so.

If you’re not prepared for this, we suggest finding an indoor, studio-based photographer.

Depending on the length of your session, and where we are travelling to, some of these items may not be relevant, but may be worth considering.

  • Water bottles
  • Small snacks
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Change of clothes
  • Wet wipes
  • Compact mirror

Outdoors photo shoots can be somewhat adventureous. They are not supposed to be “perfect”. Your makeup untouched, hair in perfect order and so on. The odds are against you if this is what you’re hoping for.

  • Expect little things to go “imperfectly” – that’s part of outdoor photography.
  • Relax, breathe, and enjoy the moment.

It might rain, you might get wet, your hair may look a little out of place – but these imperfect scenarios are what makes it adventurous and fun.

Portrait Photography FAQs

We don’t have a studio, although this is something we are considering in the future.

Currently, all our photography shoots are conducted outdoors. Based on what you’re looking for, we can provide some possible locations. You’re also welcome to suggest locations, and we can advise if it’s possible.

We’d love the opportunity to discuss this with you in more details. Depending on your expectations, we may be able to accommodate family portrait shoots.

Absolutely. You’re welcome to bring children with you.

Please keep in mind that each photography session runs for a set amount of time, and this cannot be extended. If your children disrupt the shoot, or make it difficult to get the required number of photos, this may result in less photos being delivered to you.
